It is far too easy to focus on what you still haven’t finished or haven’t achieved. 

But much  healthier to stop & appreciate how far you’ve come. 

Make a list of all you have done lately. Make the list in your head, or, better yet, on paper so you can read it when ya need a pick-me-up. 
While you’re at it, write yourself a pep talk & a love letter too. 🙂 ✨✨

I’ve taken the plunge to begin working for myself. For a very long time, I have put positive and uplifting graphics and posts on FB, IG & my blog. I have done it because I am passionate about the power of love, kindness & connection to change lives and uplift our world, a world that could use quite the hug lately. I have always felt odd about the for profit idea, one that comes way more naturally to the bold millennials who have inspired me.

While I also plan to generate enough blog traffic to host advertising, produce an ebook, and become a self-published and published author, I am offering organic skincare, aromatherapy and supplements because it is so completely consistent with my dozen-year passion for organics, alternative medicine & self-care. I have been researching and using supplements & oils for more than a decade as a complement to my daily meditation, gratitude, happiness-cultivating & kindness practices. 

So far my blog has been a loving expression of my complete faith in positive psychology and our power to energetically create the outcome of our lives. Missing has been my ability share my passion for health & wellness options that seem outside of current mainstream medicine. I have been reluctant to share these things because I am not a doctor or any kind of trained practitioner. But, I realize that my passion to uplift would be under-explored without sharing my other knowledge & experience. I will explore health & wellness more on my blog, and have chosen products I believe support my values and faith in alternative healing. 

In the next week or so, I am switching blog platforms and fleshing out how to integrate my business, and its inherent business opportunities, into my site. But in the meantime, I am moving forward with my “announcement.” I am offering Neal’s Yard Remedies, natural and organic health and beauty products, including organic skincare plus supplements & aromatherapy, as well as doTerra because of my firm belief in the power of aromatherapy and my personal, incessant use of oils, both externally and internally.

powerful tools to balance your mind


Over a year ago, I read an amazing book called “The Mood Cure” by Julia Ross. Whenever I begin to stray from the advice I learned in the book, I always regret it. The basic principle is that what we think is our personality, most of the things that follow “I am” is actually not a static, ingrained or inherited thing, at least not entirely. 

As she clearly lays out in the survey on her site, certain fears, sensitivities, habits and motivations are dictated by four brain chemicals: serotonin, GABA, norepinephrine and low endorphins. In her books, she sets out high protein diet suggestions, and primarily amino acid supplements to balance out deficiencies. 

When I first took the survey, I scored high scores in all categories. And, when I forget or choose to stop taking one or more of the supplements, I feel symptoms creep back in. 

For more than a decade I have meditated daily, practiced mindfulness and turned my natural panicked mind into a much more positive and faith-filled one. 

But I still need the brain-balancing support of amino acids. And, I much prefer the natural path. 


Serotonin

According to Ms. Ross, low serotonin symptoms include but are not limited to: fear of crowds, flying , heights, public speaking; inflexible, irritable, impatient; pessimistic, anxious; fibromyalgia, SAD.

Serotonin supplements include: 5-htp, tryptophan, St. John’s Wort or Sam-e.
GABA

Under GABA, symptoms include but are not limited to: tense, uptight, trouble falling asleep, pressured, overwhelmed; sensitive to bright lights, loud noises, easily frustrated.

GABA is a useful supplement for this category. There are many opinions on its efficacy. I find it works. Some people, including me, have a strong reaction to too much of it at one time. It is quite extreme and includes not being able to catch my breath for at least 30-45 seconds. If you try it, start under 500 mg. 

You may also want to try other amino acids like taurine and glycine instead. There are clearly herbal options too such as chamomile, lemon balm or passionflower. 


Norepinephrine

These symptom have mostly to do with feeling blah, apathetic and unmotivated, a lack of adequate dopamine (low cats). More than this, low “cats” mean you have trouble focusing and finding energy. Some symptoms are: low motivation, trouble focusing, concentrating, depressed in a flat & apathetic way. 

Supplements include: tyrosine and dlpa. She also suggests herbals to raise cats and get your brain going. They include pycnogenol and grape seed extract. 


Low Endorphins

This equates not only to physical pain, but also emotional pain. If you’ve been called sensitive, have a hard tme getting over emotional hurt, and tend to cry at lots of things from commercials to emotional slights, this isn’t your fault. You likely have a low endorphin level. It’s like we are missing the ability to comfort ourselves without this  tool. But there are options.

An Intro to Histamine Intolerance

When I first discovered histamine intolerance, I immediately wondered if it was the reason I was always congested. It definitely made me curious, but after years seeking help from doctors and therapists, and over a decade of my own research and trial & error, I was too tired of half-solutions & dead ends to take it that seriously. But recently as an answer to a plea to the universe for a solution to my declining wellness, it came to my attention again, and this time I started paying attention. 

According to Histamine-intolerance.info, histamine intolerance is the intolerance towards “normal” levels of histamine in food caused by a decreased activity of the histamine-degrading enzymes diamine oxidase (DAO) or histamine N-methyltransferase (HNMT).
The pioneering Doctor of histamine intolerance, Janice Joneja, explains it this way:

Under normal conditions, when histamine levels from any source rise above a certain level, these enzymes rapidly degrade the excess. However, when the rate of breakdown of excess histamine is insufficient to deal with the excess, the total level of histamine in the body rises.

When the total level of histamine rises above a person’s histamine threshold, histamine intolerance symptoms appear. I have had many of these symptoms, and after a serendipitous conversation with a friend dealing with angioedema, I traced many of these symptoms to family members on both my mother and father’s side, which further confirming my gut feeling that I’d finally found the root of my dis-ease. 

Review this symptom list to see if histamine intolerance could be at the root of your own mental & physical health struggles:

  • Headaches/migraines
  • Sleep problems (difficulty falling, staying asleep)
  • Difficulty regulating body temperature
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Brain fog
  • Anxiety, irritability, confusion, panic attack
  • Flushing
  • Nasal congestion, sneezing
  • Irritated, watery, reddened eyes (conjunctivitis) 
  • Hives
  • Pruritus (itching especially of the skin, eyes, ears, and nose)
  • Tissue swelling (angioedema) of face, mouth or throat
  • Anaphylaxis 
  • Heartburn, reflux
  • Nausea, vomiting, cramps
  • Diarrhea and/or constipation
  • Eczema, acne, itchiness
  • Chills and shivers 
  • Changes in menstrual cycle
  • Hypotension
  • Fatigue, can be extreme 
  • Very occasionally short loss of consciousness
  • Arrhythmia, accelerated heart rate, hearing pulse when lying down at night

While it appears to be further complicated by the fact that each person has a different histamine threshold, and many people react differently to the same foods, the great news is, there is growing consensus about how to deal with histamine intolerance. 

For me, there were a few keys steps that set me on the right path to wellness, and I began to feel better within days. The amazing thing about addressing histamine intolerance, is that while it takes a bit of awareness, there are also some quick tools to accelerate the path to renewed energy, decrease fog, increased control over moods and a greater feeling of stability.
